Lineage OS 17: Features and Supported Devices [Download Available]

Updates: LineageOS 17 Based Android 10 Download Link Below Lineage OS is one of the most popular custom ROM that you can install or use on an Android device. Almost all smartphones support the Lineage OS. Moreover, you get frequent updates for the Lineage OS and more and more features are added with every update.

Lineage OS is an open-source and free operating system which is based on the Android platform. It is the successor to the custom MOD, the CyanogenMod, which shut down its operation in December 2016. However, Cyanogen. Inc retained the rights to the custom MOD and gave a re-branding to it as Lineage OS

Lineage OS 17

Lineage OS 17 is expected to come in the second half of this year and might come just after the release of the Android Q. Google is preparing for the launch of the new Android OS i.e. the Android Q (the name is not yet decided!) and will launch it in August. Lineage OS 17 which will be based on the Android Q OS, is expected to pack some nice features as the Android Q itself has some exciting features that we are waiting to get our hands on.

We will keep updating this post as soon as we get any information related to Lineage OS 17. So, make sure to check out GetDroidTips for latest updates on Lineage OS 17.

Features of Lineage OS 17

As the Lineage OS will be based on the Android Q, most of the features will be taken from the Android Q and will be available once Google releases the source code after rolling the final official build. You can find the list of features below, that we expect the Lineage OS 17 to pack with it;

  • You might witness the Wi-Fi Direct Printing come to Android OS with the new Android 10 Q.
  • Android Q will also add Call Recording Tone support. This feature will help you record Phone Callslawfully, as in some countries recording calls is illegal.
  • Android Q adds support for using your phone as a Bluetooth Keyboard or Mouse.
  • The “Systrace Android Studio Tool” for monitoring performance will also be in-built with the Android Q.
According to a report by XDA Developers, more than 1.8 million Android devices are running the LineageOS custom ROM. Check out the official tweet below;

The statistics also reveal that the Lineage OS custom ROM supports over 163 devices, officially. However, there are un-official installs as well, that many of the devices are running the Lineage OS custom ROM.

History of Lineage OS

As already mentioned above, Lineage OS is the successor to the already very popular CyanogenMod custom ROM. The CyanogenMod closed the project in December 2016. However the same year and in the same month, LineageOS came into existence. The Lineage OS is pretty close to the stock version of the Google launcher but, with some added features and extra customization features. Moreover, one of the best things about Lineage OS is that it lets you update the Android version even if your OEM has stopped official updates long ago.

It is written in C++ and the latest version i.e. Lineage OS 16, released very recently. It is based on platforms ARM, ARM64, x86, and x86-64. Its latest release, the Lineage OS 16 is based on the Android 9 Pie. You can check out the version history of the Lineage OS below;

Why CyanogenMod discontinued?

The CyanogenMod was one of the popular custom ROM and was widely used by Android users to customize their smartphones. But you might be thinking why CyanogenMod discontinued? How CyanogenMod turned into a non-profit project? The answer to this is probably because of the developers associated with CyanogenMod. However, one interesting fact related to CyanogenMod is that the co-founder, Kirt McMaster rejected a buyout worth $1 Billion offered by Google as he was so confident that he stated, “put a bullet through Google’s head”, and the rest is history.

And this eventually lead CyanogenMod to misery as it failed to attract interest it wished to gain from Android hardware manufacturers. And, as mentioned above, finally, CyanogenMod ended their operations and pulled back their relationship with the Chinese Smartphone maker OnePlus. Moreover, they handed over the rights of CyanogenMod to an Indian OEM. It is also in reports that CyanogenMods sold its rights to the Indian OEM behind OnePlus’s back and thus, happened the misfortune.
