How to Root Galaxy Note 8 Snapdragon N950U

The Snapdragon-equipped Galaxy Note 8 is a part of the US and China markets. But we will be focusing our attention to root Galaxy Note 8 Snapdragon N950U, which is the US model.  Rooting the Snapdragon variants of Samsung devices has always been a struggle for the community. The generic method of flashing TWRP via ODIN and rooting through SuperSU would fail rigorously.

Rooting the Snapdragon variants of Samsung devices has always been a struggle for the community. The generic method of flashing TWRP via ODIN and rooting through SuperSU would fail rigorously if you have tried already.

But it seems like the Note 8 Snapdragon users are finally getting the desired attention from the root community. The Root for Snapdragon Galaxy Note 8 has been brought by XDA senior member – me2151 through samFAIL. It will help your root Galaxy Note 8 Snapdragon without tripping KNOX counter.


  • The instructions are solely meant for the Snapdragon version of Galaxy Note 8 (N950U), sold in the US.
  • Your device’s internal storage and all data will be wiped during this process. So make sure to take a complete backup first.
  • Charge your Note 8 to a sufficient battery level. This will prevent any breakage during the process.
  • Download and install Samsung USB drivers on your PC.
Once you have everything setup, you can easily root Galaxy Note 8 Snapdragon. If you’re new to the whole rooting scene, make sure to take your time and understand each and every step before you execute.


Make sure that you download all the firmware files and also the CSC file corresponding to your carrier. Cross-flashing CSC file will affect the normal functioning of your Note 8.

How to Root Galaxy Note 8 Snapdragon

Once you have downloaded all the required files on your PC, you may proceed ahead to root Galaxy Note 8 Snapdragon N950U.

  1. Grab your Note 8 and power it off completely. Then press and hold the Power + Vol Down + Bixby button until you see the warning screen. Then tap the Vol Up button once to enter Download mode.
  2. Extract the and to an accessible location on your PC.
  3. Open the folder where the Odin tool was extracted and run Odin PrinceComsy.exe.
  4. The Odin window will launch on your PC. Now, connect your Note 8 to the PC using USB cable.
  5. The ODIN program will display the active ID:COM port for your device. If it doesn’t, then make sure that you have installed Samsung USB drivers on your PC.
  6. Click on the “AP” button and select the “system.tar” file that was extracted from
  1. Now, on the left side of the ODIN program, click on the “Pit” tab. Bypass any warnings that are shown.
  2. Click on the “PIT” button and select the “GREATQLTE_USA_SINGLE.pit” file.
  3. Now, go to the “Options” tab and select the checkboxes for following options:
    • Auto Reboot
    • F. Reset Time
    • Re-Partition
  4. Finally, click on the “Start” button to flash all the files to your Note 8.
  5. Once done, you shall see the “FAIL!” message in ODIN (Don’t worry, it’s correct). The system partition was still written correctly.
Now, close the ODIN window, disconnect the phone, and again boot back into Download Mode. Once your Note 8 is back in Download mode, connect it to the PC again and follow the instructions below to finally root Galaxy Note 8 Snapdragon.
1.       Extract the downloaded and CSC zip file to get the complete firmware files and CSC (Corresponding to your device carrier).
2.       Run the ODIN program again by double-clicking Odin PrinceComsy.exe.
3.       Select the following files in ODIN:
·         BL: bl.tar
·         AP: ap.tar
·         CP: cp.tar
·         CSC: CSC_OYN_N950UOYN1AQI5_CL12173876_QB14907525_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 (For Sprint)
  1. Now, click on the “Options” tab and select the following checkboxes:
    • Auto Reboot
    • F. Reset Time
  2. Leave everything else as it is.
  3. Finally, click on the “Start” button to root Galaxy Note 8 Snapdragon.
  4. Your phone should reboot into recovery. If you have followed the instructions correctly, you should not see any error.
But, in case you see “Failed to mount /system(Invalid Argument)” error in recovery mode, you need to go back to part 1 and reflash everything as stated.

And once it is done, just select “Reboot to system” in recovery. You have just been successful to root Galaxy Note 8 Snapdragon.
